Indian Summer

Two toddlers in the empty bike lot
jumping and tossing leaves with their mother
movements clumsy in that endearing way
of toddlers

Two ducks on the pond

Faded reeds broken off at water level show
now that the water is low

The hen sleeps, her head tucked back into her wings
The drake stands sentry on the sandbar
blinking in the twilight
It is past his bedtime
but a band of teenagers visiting on the benches
keep him up

He stretches his neck forward
decides to go for a short swim
waking his mate
who lifts first one leg
fanning an outstreched wing over it
and then the other

A flock of crows passes over
and a silent stork glides
onto the roof of the school

I see him behind the pine
but you, skipping around the pond, don't
so we wheel our bikes away
through the leaves
to where you can; his black and white markings
fade with the sun between

Two golden lindens

Two bikes, one big, one small
take the path home

Author notes

Our secret place is the bio-pond behind the school - this is from last night, after swim practice.

And the poor drake, keeping him up all night ^_^
