Sparkling gold
Love is sought
By young and old
Love is life
Heated red
Love is rife
Forever spread
Love is chance
Glowing jade
Love’s a glance
That never fades
Love is risk
Darkened flax
But love will miss
The sharpened axe
Love’s illusion
Mild cream
Love’s confusion
A wild dream
Love is cost
Matted grey
Love is lost
Where I once lay
Love is distant
Satin peach
Love persistent
But out of reach
Love is rage
Metal black
Love’s a cage
And way off track
Love is hope
Brilliant blue
Love’s the rope
Forever true
Love’s re-living
Warming pink
Love’s forgiving
And makes you think
Love is trust
Pastel rose
Love is lust
That never slows
Love’s endeavor
Emerald green
Love’s forever
Sharp and keen
Love is purest
Crystal white
Love is surest
To pierce the night
Author notes
Written for the 'musical inspiration' competition. I chose option 8, “Long Way To Go” – Gwen Stefani. Quote: ‘What colour… is love?’. I listened to the song, but got my inspiriation (and subsequently the title) from just the quote. It got me thinking about how diverse love is, and I wanted to illustrate just how inadequate it would be to restrict it to just one colour. There is also a subtle message or two in there which i hope everyone will appreciate

My first thought is how amazing your take on the quote is... such depth and exploration into the notion of love having 'colours'. Thank you for the info in your author notes, it is very obvious that your inspiration was the quote alone, not the song. But that's perfectly fine, and thank you for taking the time to listen to the song =)
My only concern about the poem itself is that perhaps it is a tad too simplistic. The rhyme is clever, no doubt, very well done but I can't help but wonder if the poem could have had more power if it consisted of longer lines. That would be my only constructive criticism, (don't take it too seriously, you might have begun to suspect that I don't REALLY know what I'm talking about
)
Anyway, I totally adore the way you went through such a diverse range of colours, all with different meanings and aspects. This, combined with the fact that you went beyond using basic colours, shows much sophistication and talent (in my opinion).
"Love’s illusion
Mild cream
Love’s confusion
A wild dream"
-- my favourite lines, seemed to fall together most nicely out of the stanzas and spoke the most to me personally.
Oh my.. I'm so sorry to ramble like this, I didn't intend to.
I throughly enjoyed your poem; thank you ever so much for your entry.
Best of luck
