and shaded both his eyes from gleam
of starlight? moonlight? sunlight’s kiss?
He’d never known such light as this
Then thinking that his song took life
and conjured him of Beren’s wife
Luthien in all her splendour white!
A phantom dreamt from songs delight
But no; she danced before his eyes
with raven hair and dark blue eyes
as real as any maiden fair
but somehow made of silken air
In silver gown and cloak of blue
with diadem of every hue
Her beauty pierced his soul with pain
and fearing she would not remain
but disappear like morning dew
and leave his soul bereft; He threw
all caution to the winds and cried
not once but twice to Beren’s bride
His heart but stopped, she turned her head
She stared and smiled, then sweetly said
‘Why call me thus, ‘Tinuviel’?’
And captured in her beauty’s spell
he awkwardly recalled his song
and how he thought he’d dreamt ere long
that she would vanish from his sight
fair Luthien from out the night
But laughing like the trilling water
she gazed on him; sweet Elrond’s daughter
and told him of her name and birth
No nymph of light; a child of worth
Evenstar, Undomiel!
Fairest maid of Rivendell
Then sank his spirits low again
for she was far above him; Then
as if to leave he heaved a sigh
for all his glory passed him by
How proud he was of lineage fine
‘The Ring of Barahir is mine
and yet I reach beyond the sky
for that which mortals can but cry’
She touched his hand in soft caress
and by the act spurred on distress
but knew his heart forever hers
and wondered at his sorrowed cares
For she too, taken with such passion
a flight of heart in unknown fashion
that filled her with a need of he
as endless as the rolling sea
‘Perhaps, Estel, you yet might see
that dream fulfilled for you and me’
A cloud then darkened her sweet brow
as deep in thought she realised how
the dream was met; her doom was sealed
yet in his eyes, her soul was healed
‘The life of the Eldar, will I give
To see our son, Eldarion, live’
And thus was sealed in the bonds of fate
the beginnings of a love so great.
Author notes
My favourite book is The Lord of the Rings. I am an avid Tolkien fan and the meeting of Arwen and Aragorn is my favourite part in the trilogy. It isn't shown in the film version, but it is written so beautifully.

brilliant. I love the lord of the rings, so the title naturally attracted me. Definitely worth more than a bronze. yes, Tolkien would certainly be proud.

Very nice rhyme...I just don't know "The Lord of the Rings" so well.

So glad you liked this poem. It's about the love story between two of the main characters. The films show part of their story, but the book keeps the main part of their story until late in the trillogy. Thank you for your kind words.

I saw the title and gasped out loud, hoping it was from the Silmarillion and from the trilogy....and it is. I am absolutely speechless by the beauty of the poem...you've done a wonderful job. I think that Tolkien would be proud.
Absolutely beautiful.
And how the hell did you get only a bronze!?

Aha! A true Tolkien fan! Anyone who's read the other books including The Silmarillion really knows their stuff! Arwen and Aragorn's love story has always been a passion of mine, it goes along with my love of Cathy and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. There is a depth and strength to these passions that some other stories don't seem to catch. (If you like Wuthering Heights, there are a few poems about those on my page, Heathcliff's Remorse/Lockwoods Nightmare/Ice Cold Hand/ Cathy's Remorse)
Thank you so very, very much for your lovely words, they mean a lot to me as this is a real favourite of mine.

Wow, only bronze
What a beautiful love story, which is, of course, part of the LOTR series. Very nicely done.

This poem is wonderful! I love your word usage and rhymes. For the most part, it flows wonderfully. I've bumped into just a few lines that are a little off and I've put them below edited as examples of how you could change them to get them to flow better with the rest of your piece:
"His heart but stopped, she turned her head"
"she gazed on him; She, Elrond’s daughter "
"for that which mortal can but cry’"
"and by the act spurred on distress"
"as deep in thought she noticed how"
Wonderful!
You've told the story of Arwen and Aragorn so well and for a lengthy poem, it is in now way boring. It held me to the end. It's been a long time since I've read such a beautiful narrative!

Wow, what an incredible tale you tell. Captivating from start to finish. This is not my style of reading, but I must admit, this was absolutely wonderful. I'm impressed with the beauty and creativity of your words! Well done!

Thank you sweets,
I'm glad you liked 'Undomiel', because I love the Lord of the Rings so much. Of all the scenes in the book this was my favourite. The film was excellent, but they didn't put this scene in. I guess it would've made the film too long. Thank you again.

You've even captured the mood
of LOTR in this one.
I especially liked this bit:
"For she too, taken with such passion
a flight of heart in unknown fashion
that filled her with a need of he
as endless as the rolling sea"
Now that's passion.
This style, I think, best suits you. The way you write lends itself very well to these mythical stories. You create a sense of the grandeur of the story, but, at the same time you make the characters more accessible through your interpretations.
Well done.
(I'm a fan of Tolkein as well, but not nearly so much as my son is. I'll have to show this to him. I'm sure he'll enjoy it immensely.)
