A little flame did burn so bright,
So sweet and oh so clear;
The darkness it did penetrate,
Gently, like lover dear.
That little flame did warm my heart,
Like soothing honey tea;
Its magic light enchanted all,
It shined for me to see.
It sparkled here, it shimmered there,
Like dancers on the moon,
Though I guarded it with my life,
'Twas blown out too soon.
All joy, all hope, did waver then,
Fear, pain, came roaring in,
Then anger came, like foul sea wind,
To join its horrid kin.
That little flame, it was no more,
And I lay down to die;
Yet suddenly, a light burst forth:
An angel from the sky.
Sweetly, then, he sang to me,
His voice like honey deep;
He bid me to remember hope,
Then cradled me to sleep.
'Twas then that I opened my eyes,
The candle I was by;
I saw that it was still blown out,
And started then to cry.
And then his words came rushing back
Like cooling forest stream;
I let hope kindle in my heart,
Faint light began to gleam.
And though my little bright flame still
Was lightless as could be,
Love and hope shone in my heart,
A sweet flame, burning free.
So at last I take the steps
Upon the road of hope,
The angel's words burn in my heart,
And help me still to cope.
I feel his gentle arms on me,
My body's flushed with heat,
He keeps my soul's flame burning strong,
Our fiery lips do meet.
