eighth grade dance
1976
Thirty wild eyed students press in crowded sock hop
Something gives me the urge to push the joker in front of me.
Bodies fall like dominoes
A tall lanky boy yells in shrill voice
He zooms across floor belligerently.
He is after me in red faced frowns.
Mad hound raising long fist in front of my face.
Cris, my best friend, steps ahead of me from nowhere.
I strike out at the thin madman pursuing my frame
Oops! My open hand slaps my poor rescuer, instead
Bam! The pursuer slugs Chris in the head but misses the target
friend dazed on hardwood floor
frantic chaperon flails hands between us
I flee
Off scott free
