the Old Dog

The old dog sat down in the meadow
His one friend had left him alone
His sad eyes were failing him quickly
and his body was tagging along

The grasses about him were swaying
in rhythm to the wind in the trees
and the voices of the Angels were calling
he could hear their sweet song on the breeze

As the night came calling upon him
and the cool winds were whispering round
the old dog lay down in the grasses
and the Angels came calling on down

When he awoke he was bathed in a glory
of colors that were shining so bright
and before him his old friend was standing
and calling him into the light

He rose to his feet and went running
right into the arms of his friend
Now together they'll wander forever
and never be parted again

this was beautiful - i love how you didn't make it TOO sad, but still at the same time, gives a little tug at the heart ...and a happy ending makes me happy!

Thank you. sometimes, to tell a story, you must first take your readers to the depths with you, then bring them back. I love animals and I hate to see any hurt in anyway. On my Job, sometimes we have to deal with picking up deceased animals and that really hurts. Thanks for your wonderful comments.

That's a tear jerker. There's a great story about a sheep herder in Montana who became ill and was transported by train to Billings the largest city in the state. His dog stayed behind at the train station for twenty years waiting for his return. No knows whatever happened to him. Happy trails.

Thanks, mate. That story you just told me. I heard a song years ago about a soldier that left on a train and never came home, but the dog waited at the station all his life for his return. The station master took care of him. That's love for you, isn't it? Take care my friend.

This is cute and sad at the same time. Once again a picture was painted in the readers mind and I loved how the dog got to meet his owner again! Great job

    Hi Condor

Being a condor, you must have a better perspective than most. It shows in your writing!
There is one thing we can learn from our animal friends...
"Never speak when you can be learning something."
    Beautifully writ.

the first 4 paras are beautiful. yes, beautiful is the word.. but i thought the poem ends abruptly, in the sense that the clarity is slightly missing, nevertheless wonderful read

    Priceless

I can see such vivid imagery of those sad eyes on a puppy dog in waiting. Unfortunately for him those eyes don't effect other dogs the way do me. i love dogs and animals in general and this was one sweet poem.

I noticed that you have this wonderful poem marked as sad, dark and loss amongst others. It is those somewhat to me, but especially in the end, there is also hope and love. This is a poignant reminder that we are never alone, and will be reunited in the end when it is our time. The only thing I might change here is in the first line of the third stanza I would remove the word "it". Love this write! Blessings, Patty

The old dog must have crossed the"Rainbow Bridge"
There is a story that when dog and master are separated by the death of one, they will meet again at the "Rainbow Bridge" when the other one passes over. A lovely ending to a sad story. I hope that my dogs have such a welcome when their time comes. Excellent poem.
