Eyeliner thickly paved
round’ her dark sullen eyes,
jet hair framed pale face;
must be goin’ nowhere,
so they believe not in her,
but in her sinister colors.
Yet she flourishes in school
beside the “colored” boy;
an implant from the ghetto,
destined to fail, or so they believe,
the American Dream gone bad
in all their pompous prejudice.
Together they hold hands and unite,
to promote “Stop the Killing”,
while crowds of all colors gather;
a black balloon floats for every child lost,
black guns of every kind surrendered
to awaiting police.
These two know bigotry and hate.
Beatings and deaths over black;
from those blind to the sub-surface
or too afraid to admit connections.
Perhaps our two embrace their diversities,
knowing color is only color wherever it be.

AWESOME!!!!
I love this! I have been the "other" for most of my life. Given the American nightmare because of my own appearances. I have been a goth, a grundge kid, and though I have never been African-American, it is easy for me to understand the horrible odds anyone who is not a part of the they...a part of the accepted herd...has to face. This touched me, because when I was younger, I was discriminated against by my peers for not being like them, and it hurt then. Great write, i appreciate the tone of this. -
Thanks, poet, for entering
Interesting twist the violence against those of color and the goth comparison, and how hate crimes are hate crimes. I too am involved in a "stop the killing" movement and so true that hate can strike any color, creed, lifestyle, ethnicity, etc. Nice read after I just listened to "Let freedom ring" in re-play of famous MLK speech. Deep, poignant, powerful write. -

While reading this I was reminded of a couple of things; the Oct. 22nd Coalition and anthother instance when peaceful protesters were beaten and silenced.
Thank You for entering! -
i like your reference to colors and the message behind this poem is simple but meaningful. thanks for entering!

Your words speak profoundly of the racism that everyone pretends is not alive in the country. I really like this.

Absolutely true. People forget that racism works both ways. It's not just all against one. It's everyone against everyone else- if that even makes sense. I hope your message is conveyed to many because this nation needs help with this subject. Thanks for entering.
Peace

Nicely done. I despise racism. My oldest daughter is dating a man from Kenya. Your poem reminded me of them.
Great job.
