(in kyrielle form)
When I was five, Amy would chase me around
But hidden in your room I couldn't be found
You would hide me and keep the both of us tame
You protected me then, but now I can't do the same
When I was ten, our parents got into big fights
Listening to them screaming gave me sleepless nights
But you would take me away and we'd go to a ballgame
You protected me then, but now I can't do the same
When I was fourteen, I was swimming in the lake
I swam too far out, which was a big mistake
I was drowning but you threw a lifevest with perfect aim
You protected me then, but now I can't do the same
When I was eighteen, the world exploded with fire
We watched two planes crash, the situation was dire
You let me cry on your shoulder as we watched the flame
You protected me then, but now I can't do the same
I am now twenty-five and you lie in the hospital dying
All those years of drinking and your addiction lying
It has all become too much for your only-human frame
You protected me then, but now I can't do the same

I can see why this poem won silver. I came to read it because of the Kyrielle form. In the hands of a good poet, this form will always yield something profound as the repeated line deepens in meaning. Bravo.

This is a strong poem in feeling, especially with that last line in each stanza. Some of the rhyming is a little awkward but the emotion is what makes this piece strong.
