What Matters

No one understands
how it is that we communicate
how we understand each other
how we have a connection

I was fifteen
your were in your late twenties

I was the student
you were my teacher

Our friendship
was beyond
anyone's comprehension

They thought
it was something more
something not right
something unacceptable

According to whose standards?

By co-teachers?
by other students?
by family?
by friends?

But it was just that.
Plain and true friendship.

You witnessed my days of self-mutilation
when I had too much doubts
about living itself

You stayed up until early morning
to listen to me cry
when my sister abandoned us

You stood by me
through all
my whirlwind of romances

You kept in touch
even after graduation
even up to now

You cared for me
I cared for you
You shared your secrets
I shared my innermost ones

You and I
Nothing more than friends
but definitely special ones.

It's too much
than I could ever
thank for

To hell with all their opinions.

Why is it people always have to make more out of something than what is there? I have never figured this out. I have had and still have friends like this. I totally agree with the last line. Thanks for entering. Keep the ink flowing and good luck!

Oh wow I loved this. It seriously made me cry a little to think of two such good friends out there. I totally agree with the last line.
To hell with all their opinions.
There are so many times that I myself have felt that same thing.
This was a beautiful and well written work and I hope the contest owner can see that.
    Good luck in all things!
