at time-warp speeds,
millions of aliens
in red and black coverings
prepare for their invasion.
Leaving opulent origins
of lush, full greenery,
areas of ample food,
warmth of summer suns,
climatic changes warn them
to move on, head out
for survival.
En masse
numbers too astronomical
to even consider counting,
the plague begins…
Lift-off……
Their sounds were of sleet
pelting the nearest shelter
with millions of landings,
warriors’ bodies piling
on top of each other.
Their approach was awesome
for those watching the skies,
air all but disappeared
with their over-whelming numbers;
new territories were covered quickly
as they clumped in groups.
Scouts went out
looking for miniscule cracks
for crews to take refuge,
as they astonished earthlings
with their population.
Horrified home-owners
ran for cover,
grabbing tools for defense;
armed with caulk guns
and plastic sheets,
all openings were quickly sealed
in a vain attempt
to stop the invasion.
A yearly event
that humans can’t halt,
can’t control….
the invasion of trillions
of ladybugs
into their homes
for winter.

favorite food - I like most food....but I REALLY enjoy Peanut Butter Fudge (made with marshmallow fluff only!), and Macaroni and Cheese (home-made, of course
btw - I would never harm the lady bugs, they are great for the gardens. But it sure is over-whelming when they start hitting the side of the house - sounds like sleet. Hubby is allergic to them in the house - we try to move them to the barns and sheds......
edit 10-10-10: That is a picture of a roof - check out the AIR! That is less than 1% of what it really looks like!

I love this poem.Relating lady bugs as alien invaders so off the wall but when you think about it it really is true. They do come in the thousands to on single place and you cannot stop their coming and once that they are there you only wish they were gone.I think that you have a good chance at winning.I like the words that you chose to use describing everything you wanted us to picture.

Thank you 'michaeline' - glad you enjoyed this (it got a Silver)....
for us - it IS a yearly invasion!! They come from (outer) space....lolol
-
-
I knew I loved this write! Cogratulations on the Silver!
-
-
Thank you Neon - I have to laugh....the spider and ladybug got thrown together in a coin toss
- spiders win! LOLOLOL (they would in the 'real' world, too...lol)
-
-
I HATE ladybugs. Geez. They latch onto you. If you try to shoo them away they ignore it. If you touch them, they either spray you with nastiness or bite you.
-
-
Thank you 'Freswinn' for reading - glad you enjoyed this?..lol
I hate when they fly around and land on you, too. They also cause allergies. And some of them smell when you squish them! And they stain the ceilings where they clump! But.....they are great for gardens.
We get them here by the millions!
-
-
Oh, right, actual critique lol! Very well written, you couldn't get the image across any better if you showed us one (and you did that too!). But enjoyed? Nah, man, if that happened to me, I would MOVE. LOL
-
-
lol
they have had people in this area who did have to move - it got THAT BAD!! When they get behind the wallpaper, the pictures on the wall MOVE!!....lolol -
-
d'gyaaagh!!! creepy!

We get those too!!! They covered one of our Mimosa trees completely...kinda freaky and cool at the same time. One year they were so thick on my east windows I could not even see out!!! Shows us no matter how small we are we can make an impact if we all stick together right? Wonderful write Sis!!!

Az

-
yeah, if you look at the pic closely, you can see the air is full of them!!! It is like an 'invasion' here!!

Oh - a Mimosa tree sounds lovely!! Post a pic of it so I can see! Please...........
I honestly think the bugs will take over someday!!! LOLOL
Thanks Az - glad you enjoyed.

Swarms! Invasions! Sounds like something out of a horror movie
We get the odd one, they look pretty to us here...lol. But my god! That does not sound very pretty at all! I am seeing them in a whole new light. Your poem is *shivers* wonderful
Certainly told me something I didn't know
Superbly penned hunni, good luck

-
-
Thank you LadyD - glad you enjoyed....lol....well, shivered anyways!

lol - didn't you look CLOSELY at that picture on this? Look at the AIR - that's them coming in. what's already piled up on the wood is only maybe 1%.....yes, it is an 'invasion'....they are great for the gardens, though....and only looking for a warm place for the winter, still it's BAD!!!
-
-
Well for once I am pleased I live where I do
-
-
lol - just think of all the 'shivery' inspiration you could get for your writes!

Excellent !...oh, how I miss the Ladybirds. We get very few here and the ones we do get are ornage and black, not red and black and they are larger than the original ones I remember as a child. I enjoyed this as it brought back childhood memories. Bravo and good luck in the contest

-
-
thanks 'cutiepie' - I'm pleased you enjoyed this.
We actually get both colors - I think the larger ones bite! And they can smell, and they do leave a stain in the corners of the ceiling when they clump! But it definitely is an 'invasion' here in this area!!!
best wishes

Oh yeah...
And I make an awesome peanut butter fudge...but because of a soy allergy can't eat chocolate chips so I use cocoa...and marshmallow creme...and Laura Scudder
-
-
I also use cocoa!
what's Laura Scudder?

Okay??? Third times the charm?
Not sure where the comments went..lol...but I look like a real "airhead" there.
I Love this!! When I was a kid in Washington State, we had an infestation of aphids. So the state got the brilliant idea to drop lady bugs to eat the aphids...
we had lady bugs four inches deep in all the window sills...it was crazy!! We used to joke that the state was going to drop robins to eat the lady bugs...then cats to eat the robins...on and on...lol
This brought back some great memories...thanks so much
for another great entry! I am going to have to critique and score this one!!! There are some great entries...and I love having the pictures!!
Write on!

-
-
Thanks islekine - glad you enjoyed and this brought back the 'invasion' memories....lolol.
I think ours are here for the same reason - to eat the aphids! We have another kind also - bigger ones.....and the potato bugs (real big) always come with the lady bugs......sheesh! We've had people that have had pictures on their walls MOVE - when they take down the pictures, they are infested with ladybugss - under the wallpaper!!! It is quite a problem in some homes.
(we also have the spiders that weave the zig-zag pattern - I call them the quilting spiders, as I'm a quilter....lololol....they are a bright yellow and real pretty. I wrote on them last year here, and also on a giant web I had - I'll send you links to the pictures)...

What an invasion !
A wonderful graphic piece, bringing everything into the equation.
I loved the stanza that paints the sound of these ladybugs.
Best wishes and take care

Thank you Julie - glad you enjoyed.
yes - it really is an 'invasion' - awesome to see them coming, horrifying (in a way) to hear them hit your house!
-
-
This was most enteresting
But in our area its bees enjoyed the read

-
-
Thank you so much 'stories..' - glad you enjoyed.
Bees
- give me the ladybugs anyday!...lol....I have a prob. with re-actions to bee stings! And our ladybugs are very beneficial to gardeners
-
-
Amazing! I'm one of those crazy ladies who would not harm a ladybug..or even a trillion ladybugs. They are a godsend in the garden! Well articulated write, Jan..best to you in the contest!

-
-
Thanks Neon - glad you enjoyed.
Thanks for reminding me - I needed to edit my AN's - I would never harm them either. But it sure is over-whelming to see them come in masses like that - here, it's like a biblical plague
, and hubby is allergic to them in the house (his eyes water and swell up), so we try to move them - as best we can, there are so many!
thanks again
-
-
I had to look really close to the pic.. and until I read this outstanding poem of yours, I had no clue that they were ladybugs. omg there are a lot of them. I've been getting them in the apartment lately. had no clue why either. this poem is excellent, very informative and I absolutely love it. Fantastic job Gramma Groovey.
good luck in the contest

Thanks kat - glad you enjoyed

that picture doesn't really give any idea as to how many 'invade'....lol....look at the sky above the roof in that pic - that's all you can see, a haze of aliens....lolol.....maybe it doesn't show up well on this bg? should I change the bg?
thanks again
