Traveling along a mountain road,
I spied a path to the side.
A well-worn track led into the woods,
curving out of sight.
The roadside was bounded by thick-trunked trees,
painted with autumn's gold hue
and the path was littered with fallen debris
from a windstorm passing through.
We passed quickly by, but I wondered still
where that leaf-covered path would lead
and what I'd find on around that hill
if I moved at a slower speed,
if I walked so I'd notice the rain-dripping web
of an industrious weaving spider
or feel the chill as summer ebbed
and long for a hot apple cider.
Would it lead me on paths only recently trod
by a creature unaware?
Would the way grow tight or to an esplanade
or into a bramble snare?
I would’ve liked to imagine for just awhile
what I'd find along that track
to frighten or wonder or even beguile
before ‘twas time to head back.
Alas, my time for dreaming was short
as we sped on up the lane
and my mind moved to things of a mundane sort
far removed from a path in the rain.
