I, Cougar

Missing image
Majestic, elegant and stealthy,
from the golden peaks I observe
my quarry beneath the pine tops
unaware of my vigilance and hunger.

Creeping down the mountain side,
like lightning I strike the weakest,
with claws in neck and teeth in gullet,
bringing the beast quickly to its knees.

My kittens await my victorious return,
spotted and mischievous scamps,
hissing as they tackle the prized feast
My pride runs over as they nurture.

I bask now in the moon’s beaming light,
purring softly, my family huddled closely,
ever so watchful for perils in the darkness,
until tomorrow brings full circle of life again.

Author notes

Cougars are the only cats in the big cat family that can purr. My cougar Goliath sounds like a motor. See him on my homepage!

  • This was very moving. It flowed great. I liked the ending. Cougars are a nice animal. Thanks for entering my contest and best of luck to you!!!

  • I deeply enjoyed this piece. I don't get to see too many pieces inspired by animals- and even if they are, they normally are briefly used or its vague.

Here, you took the animal and turned it into poetry.

Good job and good luck in the contest.

Surpised you have a cougar, it made for a very unique poem. The piece strikes the right balance between portraying them as both deadly and caring. Thank you for your entry.

    Wow, you have a cougar? I will have to come back to this poem when the contest is over, and the authors are revealed to me so I can see who you are and therefore go to your page and see your cougar;

you described them so vividly here, particularly their movements, excellently done - and i didn't know they were the only big cats that can purr; do lions & tigers not purr?!

    Thanks for entering

Again it is great when you can incorporate your passion into your writing. You do well with your poetry when you do, for it comes from your heart and soul. This is a very nice piece with great description.

I like this poem about the cougar. We have had cougar sitings in my state for decades but never seen by a biologist so they didnt count. Now fish and game is saying the eastern cougar is back, but is an escapee. However, I know of sitings every 5 or 6 years back to the late 40s. I dont have a high opinion of biologists.

    Great job.
