The bravest of the brave
the fewest of the few
in war before my time
when fearless angels flew.
Spitfires spitting fire
Hurricanes aloft
men prepared to die
while Hitlers army scoffed
They saved my precious land
paid for with their blood
they gave this Isle fresh hope
by turning back the flood.
I thank them even now
by turning back the pages
I thank them oh so much
These heroes of past ages.
Author notes
The picture shows either a Spitfire or Hurricane flown by the RAF in WW2..Even though I am too young to remember, the sight of one is still, to me, very emotive.
