There is sadness in her smile
A nostalgia bittersweet
Passing memory into history
A well-worn chapter
Of an unfinished book
You were a master piece
Of me
A symbol of my past
And all I had not let go
... Or forgiven
Your face used to be the reflection
In the mirror
Now I cannot bear to look at us
My reflection has
Changed
A semi-profile
Might reveal you in me
I can still see your eyes,
So sad,
But so alive
The curve of our nose
May reveal our
Sensitive soul
Or perhaps it's our small
Ears
Hair, untamed
Frames our face
A mask so perfected
Nothing could
Shatter it
But, my mask
Has fallen
And I can breathe,
Be it shallow breath or
Gulps of fresh air
Your freckles
Still connect to mine
Our lips thin and pursed
In anger? In hate?
In pride?
I can still feel your hands
They fit ideally in mine
A shelter
From outside,
From within
Tongues taste fresh blood
Of words left unsaid
Truth swept under the rug
A quick fix to the need of
Comfort and safety
Sometimes
The mirror lies
And your eyes look back
At mine
A reminder, a memory
There are no happy endings
No band-aids for broken hearts
But sometimes I see you
And for a moment,
I smile
Author notes
The explanation for this poem would need to be a 300 page book. Again, inspired in part by "Happy Ending" by Mika. The explanation is complicated but I hope that the poem is clear.

it reminds me somewhat of what i have gone through in a relationship recently...
everything was there in the begining... and eventually there was just such a disconnect....
it's beautiful. but... am i assuming too much, are you talking about yourself or you and another person?

I'm sorry that you can relate. And you did not assume incorrectly; it's about my relationship with another person.
