A Tribute to Johnny Warren’s Dream

If we dim the parochial fervour,
put aside our adverse past,
If we can link
together as Aussies,
and under one flag play at last.

If we’ll believe that we can do it,
and commit to making it so,
If we can build
our team on passion,
That’s undaunted by any foe.

If our leaders single focus,
with a fraternity on bended knee,
will put
division behind them,
‘let the team play strong and free’

Then we’ll make it to the big one,
To the World Cup soccer show,
and you’ll hear
a voice from heaven say,
‘See - I told you so!’

For then football will unite us,
And in its world will we belong,
Yes, they’ll marvel
at our spirit,
‘Never say die’, our battle song.

But don’t stop pressing forward,
there is much more to be done,
For this is
just the beginning,
of our journey to number one.

"What did you think?" - you're asking a Pom? LOL

Robust and confident stuff. I don't like the inverted word-order in line 5 though - just my personal taste - I don't think it sits well with the rest of the poem, which has a good sense of Aussie straightforwardness.

As for the theme, well, if you can do as well at soccer as you do at cricket, then the world's your oyster!

    Welcome to AP

      Thanks for the feedback

Yeah ... it's an Aussie poem alright and hopefully means a lot to a team previously ranked 64th in the world. I never thought a pom would get it but a pleasant welcome all the same. Thanks again.
