Alone
My mother is lost
Though this world of ours
Decreasing by the second
I must find her
She taught me how to walk
Fed me when I could not fight
She understood the ways of nature
And held me on those cold nights
But where is she now?
How could she abandon me?
I am but only two months old
And need her the most
She was my best friend
The one who understood me
She knew what I wanted
And knew what I needed
Found
My mother lies
By the pond
Her empty eyes
What have they done?
Who could of done this?
I try to wake her up
But it is useless
Why is the world so cruel?
I will never understand
I bet my mother could of answered that
Now I am alone in this world
Which is getting smaller and smaller by the second

I did options 1,2 and 4. Elephants are my favorite animals. Me, I have still never figured out why the world is so cruel to these beautiful creatures.

Aw, so sad! I actually thought it was a child without the aid of the title, but then when it described the mother dead, I knew it was an animal. You describe the feelings so vividly and so touching. I nearly cried. Yes, I agree with you, how can hunters do this to any animal? ='(
I especially felt touched when you described the mother elephant's empty eyes. Also, I can feel the baby elephant is trapped in a world closing in on him. So sad!
Good luck in the contest! =D

Oh this is so sad; the title itself reminded me hugely of that song from Disney's Dumbo; "Baby Mine" - a song that never fails to bring tears to my eyes.
You did a wondrous job of climbing into this young elephant and describing it all to us! Think my favourite part had to be;
"Found
My mother lies
By the pond
Her empty eyes"
Because the sentences were short and so each word was like another dart into the skin of the murdered elephant! Thank you for entering this

Finally, a Poet Chose My Beloved Elephant!
Thank you, thank you and thank you! For seeing the world through the eyes of an elephant; a baby elephant who has lost his/her mother to the cruel exploits of mankind for her tusks. Yes, the female African elephant has tusks too,(unlike the Asian Elephant, where only the males have tusks.)
This poem was so very sad, but describes a scenario that is happening probably at this very moment because there has been an increase in elephants being hunted mercelessly for their tusks due to the recent deregulation of the CITES ban on ivory. My understanding of this is that the result of the CITES ten-year ban on the selling of ivory being modified to allowing the EXISTING stockpiles of ivory (Confiscated, etc), to be sold (recently to Japan from Africa), has INCREASED the illegal poaching of elephants and the black market of ivory - as was the prediction of most experts.

The last stanza of your poem is remarkable in that it displays the idealic love of offspring for the mother and how impossible it would be to survive alone in this heartless world;
"Why is the world so cruel?
I will never understand
I bet my mother could of answered that
Now I am alone in this world
Which is getting smaller and smaller by the second "
The, "I bet my mother could of answered that" really got to me. *tears* Could we really explain the cold, ugly darkness of this world to our children?
Thank you for your entry and best wishes to you!

I read the articles... the one about the elephant tusks is so sad! I also love elephants!! They are adorable and so innocent! Thanks for your comment!

I freaking love this! Firstly, I also love los elefantes
.
Secondly, becoming the baby elephant was a very unique way of portraying poaching. As for the poem, some parts are a bit clunky. Try an edit to make the flow smoother. Other than that, I love it! I doubt these were intended to be lyrics, but I sang them to myself anyway
. I can imagine the instruments in the background and everything!
