look at me -
teeth gnashing
on crusted, dirty cuticles
and dig
until irritated flesh
weeps plasma
into callouses.
I was here
when Bible pages
were fresh - instead of neglected
"stay put, be brave, keep shooting."
but this -
it doesn't
break your heart anymore
(at least not like it used to)
ii.
I'm drawing chalk outlines
of where everything should be -
compassion, heart, soul...
the only things missing
are the lungs.
but here
take mine, I have two
& gills aren't difficult
to etch into place
because
the ache in my chest
is angry
and I can only take
so much radiation
before malignancy
creeps out of my pores
and whittles holes
where my abdomen should be.
I am trapped within my bones -
pounding against my ribcage
hoping the neon
of x-rays catches my eye
and alerts the press

this ship is going down,
but you super glued yourself
to the helm,
and your hand reaches out
but I was already gone---
miles away in a lifeboat,
swallowing your pictures
to let stomach acid
eat away at memories
captured on film paper
but it's more than that.
I cannot drape a white cloth
over the part of my brain
where you used to take
sheet metal to your skin
to make sure that
you were always a part
of me.
(a transplant may be in order.)

So... I really poured myself into this. I think Alive4aLiving can relate to this with her last ex... and it's about an ex of mine, actually. I tried to use all the prompts, and I'm pretty sure that I did. If this isn't what you're looking for tell me, I'll see what I can do.

The third vignette was by far the best part - which is a good thing. It really intensified the write with emotions.
Just a small note though: "of me" - I would have ended it there.
The last line is cool and all, but my brain wanted it to end at "of me" - it just seemed to go better like that.

or just leave it.
