In My Heart

As one more sun sets at night,
Another day's gone past.
My folks are getting older now,
Their lives can't always last.

They've raised us four, bathed in love,
Always hanging on.
But I know some day, I'll need them,
Only to realise they're gone.

So I ask myself why I can't
tell them how I feel.
How thankful I am for all they've done,
'n that this love is real.

The words I write, I'll show them,
'Cause it's harder to speak out,
And yet I hate the thought of them
Living in any doubt.

They've supported me for all my life,
Sharing in both my joy and pain
If I don't say "thank you" now,
Will I get the chance again...

My folks mean the world to me,
They taught me to love and give.
There's so much that I owe these two;
They gave me my life to live.

God help me please, to find the words,
To say "I love you" to them straight,
'Cause I don't want to wake up one day,
And find out it's too late.

If you ever read this, folks,
Know it to be true.
I love you both, with all my heart;
I owe my life to you.

Author notes

I have a fantastic relationship with my parents. We talk daily, visit regularly, I only moved out of home 2.5 months ago. They've always been there for me, given me money when I needed it, stood at my side when I suffered from depression, and gave me all the opportunites a growing girl could need.

I love them both so much, and yet find it so hard to tell them this to their faces, because I cry when I tell people that I love them - because it means they have my heart, and one day they won't be here. But I don't want to upset them, yet, ... I wish I had the courage to say it to them straight.

I absolutely love this! It's probably one of my favorites! You should frame it and send it to you parents for Christmas. If you can't say it to them, put a little simple note that says "I love you". It might make you feel better. I love this! Great job!

this is a wonderful piece of work. I like this bit so much. It does tell a story of opportunity, time we have in our hands, and sadness when moment is not seized. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing

I am moved by this poem, very much so. My own parents are long gone now and I was almost too late with them. I still find it hard to speak of emotions to those I love the most. An excellent poem with a wonderful message and tribute to your parents.

Thank you for commenting Rbruce; in this day and age, so many children are not brought up in love - which, i think, makes it all the more important that we who are, show that we appreciate it

The pace of life and the pressures families face make giving of love more difficult today than when I was a child. Life was slower and time was not valued so highly. We always had time to play, time to talk and time to love and be loved. I think our society has regressed a little by speeding up the pace of our living.

    Unbelievably touching...

This has got to be the most moving piece that I've read in so long (maybe I've never read anything of this type as beautifully touching). While you don't seem to realize that you have already 'found' the words (when you remarked, "...God help me please, to find the words, To say "I love you" to them straight..." - those very words would not fail (in my mind) to cause any parent to rain tears the size of golf balls. Very amazing...you must be an incredible daughter with incredible parents.

thank you so much for your comment; it was such a nice one to read - i can say "love you, night" with a kiss on the cheek - but to sit down and say to them, "thank you for all you've done for me, i love you so much" is what i struggle with, and there's no real reason but the fact that i am then acknolwedlging, openly, that i love them with all my heart - which should surely be a good thing and yet it scares me but again, thank you for your comment

    OMG, this is just awesome
It reminds me so much of the first time i told my parents i loved them, when i was young i was always to proud to say it...but when i found myself behind bars i said it for the first time but i couldnt touch nor hold them, i saw the tears in my mothers caring eyes and that also got a tear out of me too, since that day i made sure i told them that i loved them every chance i get.

    Loved it

    A tip

Take a tip from one who knows. Go up to them . gave them a hug and just say.. I love you. . Because if you do not you may regret it, like I do, for the rest of your life.
