Looking in Autistic Eyes
written on Jun 27 2004
Into brown eyes I stare
wanting to search your soul
knowing that you're in there
but I can't quite grab hold
I want to know where you are
to see the things you see
then as I think I've lost you
on your face, a smile gleams
And there in your eyes
comes recognition and love
as I hold back my tears
and into my arms you come
Its like you know what I feel
and desperately want me to see
all the things there is inside you
that you can't express to me
It's a battle we wage each day
of an illness I've yet to understand
but I'll keep fighting forever
for you, my special little man

This poem, it seems to me, grasps and explores the difficult relationship in the autistic situation and does it in such a delicate way that those of us who know nothing of it can become part of it.
Couple of points of English -- penultimate stanza its should take an apostrophe and "all the things there is inside you" is ungrammatical. A beautiful poem.

a good poem, delving into the mind to reach and caress with a smile.

there is a contest for autism poems recently opened which allows prewrites.
