We were young,
Only children,
I had a dream,
And so did you,
We,
Very much in love,
Not wanting time to seperate us,
But,
One late afternoon,
One call changed everything.
One month later,
You traveled to some far off land,
Me standing in the airport,
Not wanting to let go,
Tears running down my face,
You holding me tight in your arms,
And,
With one last kiss,
You stepped off.
Watching you go,
I grabbed your hand,
Not wanting to let go,
But knew I must,
Your hand slowly slipped out of mine,
And there you went.
Tears streaming down my face,
Faster and faster,
Now flowing uncontrolably,
You,
Vanishing out of sight.
As I looked around,
I seen mothers,
Not wanting to let go of their sons and daughters,
Fathers,
Not wanting to let go of their children,
Their wives,
Not wanting to let go of him,
Lives,
Completely changed.
One airport,
Filled with tears,
Filled with love,
Filled with sadness and heartache,
A dark shadow creeping through the halls.
Days pass,
Then months,
I hardly hear from you,
And when I do,
My heart for leaps joy.
You tell me stories,
Cheerful stories,
And horror stories,
I can not begin to imagine what you go through.
Then,
One day,
Your homecoming arrives,
I,
Stand in the middle of anxious mothers,
Anxious children,
Anxious wives,
But that dark shadow lerks in the corners,
Slowly coming out upon us,
Then,
Here comes you American soldiers.
Loved ones racing into their arms,
Grasping each other tight,
Not wanting to let go,
Others wait,
And wait,
And wait,
I wait,
The last few step off the plane.
I search for you,
Much like the others,
People going up to the others,
Then tears stream uncontrolably from their faces,
Tears from Heaven,
They fall to their knees,
Their hearts shattered,
Lives will never be the same,
One soldier hands a mother her son's Bible,
Tells her he's in a better place,
No more war,
No more pain,
No more suffering.
I start crying,
I cannot find you,
Then,
A shadow appears in the corridors,
And there,
You appear,
I run into your arms,
I look into your eyes as you hold me tight,
Our lips intertwined,
As I look in your eyes,
I see pain,
I see death,
I see suffering,
I see it all,
I see,
You have changed,
Forever,
Then,
We all say:
Without you brave souls,
We could not stand,
We could not have freedoms that we have today,
We could not be ourselves,
And all we can do is:
Thank those who risk their lives,
Who makes this country a better country,
And the country it is today,
Our prayers go out to all,
You'll never be forgotten and will hold a place in our hearts,
A safe return awaits you,
May God bless you,
Forever,
Our Soldiers,
Our Heros,
Our Love.

Wow. That scared me as well. I thought he wasn't coming home! haha Well, I can relate to this a lot. I am truly touched because I too am going overseas to Afghanistan at the end of this month. This really stuck home and it made me tear up. Fantastic write. Wonderful, dear. Keep it up!

Haunting
You really had me going for a minute...I thought he was gone. PHEW!! Glad to see him step off that plane!
I think you've penned this one beautifully, it's full of heart and emotion. Excellent job with pulling the reader into the scene.
Thank you for entering and good luck in the contest

This is so good
more than just the beauty of the words
but for the intimate truth of the story told
I know this feeling well

I cannot imagine the pain, joy, sheer grief and utter happiness that must take over an airport when a convey of soldiers are due to arrive home, and though I imagine it would be a heartbreaking scene, from what you have said here, it is something that I would like to see, someday; perhaps never to experience [I am not American] but, truly yes, to see, for could there be a more moving ceremony - it must surely rank up there amongst all others. Indeed, you have opened my eyes a little with this work; it is raw, and needs editing [i think] but at the same time so informative, and - really showing us another side of the battle. Well done you, and best wishes int he contest!
