Your birthday has come around again
And I'm trying to write a poem for you
But as usual, I'm feeling frustrated
Because of how much words can't do.
They can't capture all you are to me
Like some tiny photograph in a locket.
It's like trying to bottle the ocean
Or put a rainbow inside my pocket.
A mother's love is a force of nature.
It can't be measured in height or length.
Nothing God or man has or will create
Can equal it in softness or strength.
For with all of it's enormous power,
It's also tender, patient and mild.
The forces of hell wouldn't dare stand
Between a mother and her child.
Even God bows his head in reverence
For it is love in its purest form.
It has the greatest ability of all
To heal, to inspire, to transform.
So I hope you understand my dilemma.
A poet needs to know his limitations.
God made all we see and called it "good"
But mothers were His greatest creation.

This is true and mothers bless us with the children of the world.

You have put into words why I find it hard to write poems about my own mother and children. Thank you for such a wonderful poem...it says it all...alby

Exquisite!!
It has been a VERY long tiime since I've read anything from you... heck it's been a long time since I've been on this site....
But to come by and view one of your newest, and immediately feel such emotion...was simply awesome. This poem is a wonderful testimony of love for your mother!! I know she is going to love it and cherish it for years to come, I know I would. I can only hope that when my children grow, that they feel that same way about me.
You've honestly, speaking personally, made being a mom feel even more worth it.
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful poem.

His Greatest Creation
Wow. Your poem is beautiful; amazing and much much more. I enjoyed this poem immensely. Being a mother myself it makes me feel "appreciated"; and brings me to the moment.
Well done. A truly great poem

Awesome Mark! I hope my kids will write something along these lines about me at some point. Luv Ya!!

This is another poem in which the beats frequently miss, there are jarring places and yet all of it is held together by the simple sincerity of it all and the fact that almost everybody has a mom and loves her. My mom died when I was ten, so I almost cried over this poem, even as I saw the flaws. The honesty of the whole poem is so heart-felt and plainly adoring that I could have given you and you mom BOTH a kiss . Anyway, I certainly wish you and your mom nothing but the best. I just wish I had a father! yours - the ocer

Hey Oce,
I'm sorry to hear about your parents. For all your loss, or perhaps because of it, you have a great, big heart. Thanks for the constructive criticism, and for letting me know this poem got through. Hope you're doing well, brother.

AMAZING POEM!!
Hey Mark Rickerbeeeee....oh my goodness another amazing write..this should be on a Mother's Day card; how well have you articulated what is probably hard for many people to do--express such deep love and devotion to one's mother and to also appreciate what mother's mean to us. I feel so proud to be a mom and hope I live up to these words below...
"Even God bows his head in reverence
For it is love in it's purest form.
It has the greatest ability of all
To heal, to inspire, to transform"
Excellent job as usual my friend..suzy

Great poem Mark!!
You nailed it really good here.
When my Mom was in the hospice before she passed, I was sitting there one day, out of the seven she spent there,
and the nurse came in and straightened her covers.
When she did, just for a second, I saw my Mom's belly-button. I realized at that very moment I'd never in my life seen her belly-button. When I was a kid, most women wore one-piece bathing suits at the beach and so on.
I realized too, at that same moment, that I'd never considered her to be anything less than a super-power of some kind.
The fact that she had been a little girl once, gone to school, dated, had a first job, boyfriends and the like had never crossed my mind until that very moment.
So you see, everything I know, or needed to know, about my Mom, I learned at the Navel Academy.
I love reminiscing about her, and thank you for bringing her memory to the forefront today.
A truly writeworthy poem, Mark!

Beautiful Dedication!
There really isn't enough you can say about moms, is there.
I really enjoyed the imagery of you trying to capture an idea so grand and glorious to fit in your pocket- the impossibilities are endless!
Very nicely done!

"It's like trying to bottle the ocean
Or put a rainbow inside my pocket."
These were my favorite lines until I read:
"even god bows his head in reverence, for it is love in it's purest form"
This is beautiful Mark. -

Thanks, Criss! That was a lightning fast response. I just posted this a minute ago!

Criss,
You are so psychic. I almost called you Quick Draw McGraw but didn't, then you said "I'm quick at the draw." That's spooky. lol What's the surgery for? Nothing serious, I hope.
