Standing on the ledge of life
staring into the abyss,
I wonder how I got here.
How did things go amiss?
My credit cards are maxed out
so I went to my savings account.
Something must be wrong.
How can I have a negative amount?
Okay – things aren’t the same,
tell me something I don’t know.
It’s even affected my marriage.
My wife’s now pay-as-you-go!
Where have all the heroes gone;
the ones that saved the day?
Superman and Batman,
Green Lantern with his ray.
I miss the images of my youth,
the ones that I aspired to.
They stood for truth and justice,
with them you always knew
that good would triumph in the end
and greed would find defeat.
Where are they now when needed
to battle on Wall Street?
The good guys wore their white hats,
the bad guys wore their black,
how can we be the good guys
when other countries we attack?
Even in our politics,
the only options are to give.
The winners don’t offer hope
they’re just the most negative.
I want my childhood heroes
to return to present day.
They may not really exist
but they showed us all the way.

Excellent
What a great take on the picture. You described it so well. Best of luck in the contest.

it would have been good to see 'the finale' to this; you open with 'standing on a ledge/staring into the abyss', so I was half-expecting you to jump at the end
thanks for your entry; it's interesting!

I can relate to this poem so well, I sometimes too feel the want of having the same believes I had as a child, not knowing how horrible the world really could be.
Question, what does "pay-as-you-go" mean? Is it a saying? Never heard it before
Best of luck in the contest!

"My wife’s now pay-as-you-go!" Hahahah.....Thats just rich!!!! But it sums up the way our society has fallen lately.......But I too wonder, where have they all gone? Cause I know that I sure could use one

It's nice how you present Batman and Robin as Wall Street heroes hehe...if only they could save us in our economic crisis...as well.
I feel this drama...pathetically, this is me

Reminds me of the story of the man who was sitting on his back porch when a cloud forms and a voice says "Cheer up, things could be worse.".... he did and they were LOL. Hang in there! This is just part of a cycle and when you're at the bottom, all directions are up

I was really in that mood you described...and read this. I am smiling, atleast I am still smiling...even if my situation is not something to smile about.
Thanks Sir Ken for the read.
