The Spirit

Upon a night so ordinary, came something quite the contrary,
My mind spinning like a cup of coffee violently stirred by a spoon,
A Bible lesson wrapped so tight, a tiny perch couldn’t grab a bite,
No, not even a voice of light could sing of such and stay in tune.
The tale of Jesus and the sight of him dying at the break of noon,
Seems to a child the words of a buffoon.

On the next Sunday morn, I sat in my room lost and forlorn,
My mother passed her gaze so torn, asked me of my lessons that June,
I could tell her nothing new, and this just seemed to be the cue
For a voice so light in hue, to pierce me like a small harpoon.
I looked about my bedroom, lit by a bright shining moon,
But could only hear, “He cometh soon.”

“’Tis only a dream,” I said to myself, “a spectre of sleepless night,”
But in my ears the tones were ringing, ringing of that fateful noon,
Silenced by unearthly singing, to my God I began clinging,
Lord what message is this voice bringing, singing of arrivals soon.
In the darkness, my soul writhing, the silence adding as sand to a dune,
The Spirit spoke of Christ and remained, quothe within “He cometh soon.”

Author notes

Found this and forgot I wrote it when I was about 16.

May the Maker of My Mind be praised by it!

I plan to revise this poem: please leave constructive criticism!

Nicely done. Enjoyed the read. Great use of words, my favorite lines "my mind
spinning like a cup of coffee violently stirred by a spoon" and "A bible lesson wrapped so tight, a tiny perch couldn't grab a bite". Thanks for sharing.

I'm not Christian, and I've never really been one for relgious poetry, but as a poetic piece, this is strong, and very elegant. I can appreciate the emotion and technique. It's flows very well, and your word choice is exquisite. Nice writing.

This is really good! I love the rhyme scheme in it! I like it! It has a very...mmm... mysterious tone, I guess, which really created a heightened suspense. Cool! God Bless You!
