I remember when we first met
You said “your wings are growing
Would you like to go parasailing over the
Cook Islands”
I said, “Well could you hold me up
Cause I’m not strong enough
Not strong enough to try”
So now you go
Down the prairie highway
To the Grand Canyon
Do they have storms down there?
You said you’d spend the winter
But you never said you’d spend the morning
Watching all the rivers
Of song meet in the middle
It’s hard to say goodbye when you
Barely knew someone but I
Can’t help but shed a tear
Just a little tear for you
You’ll be leaving on Monday
You said, “Don’t worry about me, kiddo,
I’ll be with Aunt Georgie
She’s got to be a Nancy”
I said, “But you’re not a crooner
I hope you’ll come back sooner
Than the calendar predicts
Hey, don’t bite my fingers
Because you know I’ll linger
Longer than the calendar predicts
so now you go
Down the prairie highway
To the Grand Canyon
Do they have storms down there?
You said you’d spend the winter
But you never said you’d spend the morning
Watching all the rivers
Of song meet in the middle
Hey, where’s the orchestra?
You left me in a flock of sparrows
Competing with the songbird squadron
Barrel roll to the left
What else could you expect?
It’s hard to say goodbye when you
Barely knew someone but I
Can’t help but shed a tear
Just a little tear for you
It’s hard to say goodbye when you
Barely knew someone but I
Can’t help but shed a tear
Just a little tear for you
It’s not the military
Guess I should be lucky
They didn’t come this way
It’s not the landlady
Guess I should be lucky
I’m allowed to stay
As you go
Down the prairie highway
To the Grand Canyon
Do they have storms down there?
You said you’d spend the winter
But you never said you’d spend the morning
Watching all the rivers
Of song meet in the middle
You said I’d keep floating on my broken wings
Cause we all have to fly away someday…
It’s hard to say goodbye when you
Barely knew someone but I
Can’t help but shed a tear
Just a little tear for you

Author notes
This song is about all those friends one makes that then move on, but also about the realization that they came into your life to teach you something and had to leave once that was taught. Fairly personal.
