Madam Lehouillier had been dying of cancer for a long time:
but they managed to keep her comfortable
and at ninety years old,
she had made her peace with life a long time ago.
Last Sunday they took her for a ride up the Saint Lawrence.
As they rolled along
she watched the the river pensively.
"You are quiet, Mama."
"I'm thinking of what has been
...and what is to come."

Very good.
You convey a real feeling of foreboding in this elegant poem.

-
such a real and clear image
i've seen a lot of you short poetry
like haiku and such
but not so much free verse like this
you really have a clean and tight writing syle
that I appreciate

This is really sad, but very very sweet. Someone who is at peace knowing what has been and what shall follow. It really makes one stop and think. God bless Mrs. Lehouillier, and God bless you to, dogfish. You have a great sense of compassion which shows in your words.

As Mary said this does catch in the throat and you feel the ache in your heart. Softly beautiful

Thank you very much, Mary.
I was very moved by Mrs. Lehouiller's words when I heard of this the other day...

this was precious
i love how with the ending you made her so strong...
her thoughts to me are more about how you all will move on and keep going than concerns for herself...
reflecting on family and history
just where i went
