Tell me ‘friend’, when did I slip below dignity,
afforded with refusal of common courtesy,
a gift-wrapped silence, pointed ignorance
to even the merest of simple greetings?
Please, allow me to bow, scrape, genuflect,
to beg all levels of unbridled forgiveness;
how dare I even speak, or harbour notions
that your being operates at a human level?
My apologies.
Your ‘highness’ should spit upon such crudeness;
I languished in utter obliviousness,
a cavorting, drooling town idiot, not realizing
that you only acknowledge beings of perfection.
Thus I was cast aside like a foreign thought,
a vulgar invader to an angelic psyche,
a putrid black mark, staining faultless light,
set in high tower, remote from unclean world.
My condolences.
Commiserations, offered in solidarity,
to every other poor, unsuspecting wretch
whose eyes lie in blinded slumber,
to the pecking and preening of your arrogance.
Tell me, how miserable and bleak is the world,
when your only cohorts are slavering sycophants?
never realizing your palette is blank, mind vacant,
that there is nothing within you worth worshipping.
We all only fell for a vacuous spell.
Author notes
This piece is dedicated to all the 'friends' that have ever used you as a substitute, only ever been there, only ever talked to you when it suited them, or when they wanted something from you, the rest of the time, you are ignored, never good enough to even say hello to.
It is dedicated to the arrogant and their ignorance, that makes them think they are somehow better than you, to their vacuousness, to the blindness of their behaviour, how they think they are doing nothing wrong and how they think they treat people fine, how they think they are open, friendly and helpful, but, they are more often than not, the exact opposite of that.
I'm sure everyone has had and probably still does have people like this in their lives.

Oh this is how all my friends are, pretty much. Also boyfriends. Like Estelle says, "I'm not your substitute love" and I know I have been that a lot of the time. Also friends also. If they can't be with who they really want to be with, they'll go with me. If they need advice or guidance, they'll come to me. When I need someone, they are far gone.
These people are ignorant and arrogant, infuriating and fatecious. Nicely done. -

Thanks. Yeah, that's the way it has been with me with most friends ever since I was very young.
