Summer flooding cancelled our pride celebration,
Scheduling conflicts further delayed things;
Finally this October weekend, we march and party,
Several months late on a beautiful autumn day.
Pressure-cooked weeks of heteronormative society,
More tolerant than before, but still majority-driven;
My fatigued aged body finally made it across time,
To gain precarious foothold on another safe haven.
A time to be out on the streets, Gay and Proud,
To wear and say whatever, without risking all.
A time to feel unity with a large group of others,
All different appearing, all facing the same struggles.
Our Creator made us as (s)he made heterosexuals,
Our Creator must have had a good reason for this,
I can imagine several. We have an ingrained right
To love and live with any adult we are compelled to.
This pride day in Central Iowa, We can rightfully say,
Better late than never, a good day to be proud and gay.
