It has been an arduous uphill climb
From humid, hellish depths of fetid slime.
Each step in my journey takes me higher,
Further away from the sucking mire.
Inhaling deeply of the cool crisp air
I look up at the worn and winding stair.
In the distance I see the mountain peak;
The apex of everything that I seek.
My spirit aches from old arthritic pains,
Exacerbated by the cool mountain rains.
Yet, with each step I’m closer to the crest
Where at long last I will have passed the test.
I’ll only reach the highest pinnacle
After overcoming each obstacle.
