the microphone
backfired
my words into
eardrums, deaf
to my voice.
I found solace
in spotlight's after burn
and stage fright.
Author notes
this is about the first time I ever performed my poetry in front of people. I hope this is what you're looking for!

a very different moment in time to capture, but I'm sure at some stage even the most professional people have had performance jitters - George W Bush for example is a perennial "deer in the headlights" lol.

I can't imagine reading my poetry to a group of people so kudos to you for doing it

i like 'backfired' too especially italicized. i could almost see words whooshing through the air
this reminds me of when i read eulogies i wrote for my parents. i guess that's the closest i've come to going public
sharp and to the point!

i think its interesting how you chose the word "backfired." i think that using that word in the whole context of your poem shows the insecurities of performing poetry in front of people. to me it raised the feelings that you could be up on stage pouring your heart and its secrets out, but people dont like it, or they dont care, they dont appreciate it, or they use it against you. i love how you raised all of those feelings and possibilites in just a few words. great write and good luck in the contest!
