Senior Run

When I was a freshmen
I didn't get it
Why they wanted to get outta there
I had a new found freedom
Yet here they were, the seniors
Stampeding down the hallways
Screaming at the top of their lungs
A song I wouldn't sing for three more years
I just watched from the classroom
The walls rumbling
Thinking school was a luxury

When I was a sophomore
The air was as tense as a loaded gun
And we all waited from the doorways
Hanging out into the hallways
Straining to get a peek
Three, two, one...
And the seniors exploded through the doors
And I could tell from their faces
That they were flying high
Screaming, "07! 07! 07!"
At a full gallop
Didn't let us do that type of thing in middle school
And high school was still a fair weather freedom

When I was a junior
I watched two of my best friends
Run the senior run
Holding hands
And ready to get the hell outta there
That school was poison to them
And we were all getting too big for it
I thought to myself
One more year...
And my heart raced
And I knew, oh, I knew
I was soo ready

Now I'm a senior
And high school years are the equivalent
Of a day on earth
Here we all are
Chomping at the bit
Arms open wide
Ready to run
Out on the edged of a boudaryless universe
And we are outta control
And its me and Amy and Carlia and Asia
And we are all holding hands
Running through the school
Screaming that song we'd waited so long to sing
"09! 09! 09! 09!"
I'm all outta breath
Bones feel like jello
Muscles feel like cement
My heart is racing
And my underclassmen friends smile wistfully as they watch me go
This is our day
Me and my friends
Keeping our feet on the ground
As we join the stampede
Through the school building
Now we are making the run

Author notes

The Senior Run is a tradition at our school. I have waited forever to experience this. We did it Oct. 3, 2008. It was the day of Homecoming. We ran like hellions throughout the entire school screaming and yelling.

Dedicated to my friends: Asia, Stephanie, Amy, Carlia, Kaylie
And anyone I forgot to mention.

Congrats! We actualy made it! Let's have a great senior year!
Thanks for being my best friends through high school.
We've all shared a moment that will last till the end.

I liked this a lot. I went to a small private school where something like a senior run would have given our principal a heart attack. We weren't even allowed to throw our caps at graduation. So I can definitely identify with that desire to just cut lose and go crazy. I think you did a great job of showing the growing anticipation that you had for that moment, and just how much things change during the course of high school.

i thought it was pretty good...i think you could of been more creative with it but over all very good...it had a feel of antisapation...we didn't have anything like that when i graduated...kinda suck so now i'm envious of you...lol
