The Land of Coo

Well past the forest, over the highland;
there is a place, that is found on no map.
A secretive place, this hidden island,
it’s where the future and past overlap.
Legends are born in the palm of a hand,
in this magical place, time's held in a trap.
This island was given a name of its own
yet no one can speak it with lips alone.

If the name is spoken, all will be clear,
for there’s magical power, in that name.
Until that happens, we all live in fear…
but if it is spoken, we shall reclaim
all our lost treasures and all we hold dear.
He who can speak it, the throne he may claim
and we shall exalt him and fall on our knees,
bestowing full reign and the kingdom keys

A miracle happened one fateful day.
The skies were filled with a thunderous sound,
the air was thrilled with a lightning display,
on the shore of the island a child was found.
Never before had such fuss come this way.
Amazed at the sight we all gathered ‘round.
The coo of this child is what we all heard;
the people all smiled; we now knew the word.

Author notes

We all have a secret island within us and the door to that island can be opened with a word spoken without lips. The coo of a child is that word and it lets all the bad feelings disappear.

    fabulous

I fell into the enchanted words and had visions of a faraway realm in each line. Bravo for this finely crafted poem.

among many, I also have by secret little happy place to which I retreat often. It's there I feel completely safe and free from the harm of the world

I said it in a message, but you deserve to have it here with your poem.

I stand by my personal tastes and what I wrote before, but I am disappointed in my inability to completely explain my appreciation for this poem.

I may not enjoy such structure, but I am no fool. Being able to blend a fantasy narrative with the structure of Ottava Rima is impressive and I did not put words to this as I should have.

The detail of the stylistic choices, the thought put into this poem, the alluring ambiguity of the places and people...all serves your reputation as a poet quite well.

If you do not wish to reenter your poem into the contest, so be it. But we are at a loss if you do not. I thank you for even the briefest moment you gifted us to spend with this poem.

    Well done. Very well done.

    Blessings,

    C

Wonderful!! I'd love to live in this land. Excellent poem, Amera. I love the story in it and the last couple of lines are amazing. If only this could happen in our world.
    Love,

I love this one, the imagery and stark fantasy takes me off into another world, dimension, or time. I especially like the last seven lines. his is beautiful in all its enchantment.

Thank you so much Interesting that you picked that up. The last seven lines are the only ones with an internal rhyme. I did that to show the change that came over the land.

You are a natural story teller and by far the best writer of ottava rima on site, or anywhere. I'd love to see you write something of substantial length in the form

    Great stuff
