Rain

Missing image
Rain is peeling the farmhouse roof this morning,
but I hear and see only you, for you are like rain:
a welcome gift during periods of drought—a
thirst-quencher to God-forsaken deserts.

Rain is beating on the farmhouse roof this morning,
and I want to make poetry to complement its rhythm,
though I have qualms about having to reveal my
secret thoughts to you, in whispers, just hours before
you go back to the city, back to your life.

I want to make poetry this morning,
but I see no poetry in wheelbarrows, or chickens
(Leave that stuff to William Carlos Williams).
I see poetry in you, but, when you’re near me,
my emotions can’t make speech,
my eyes can’t see colors,
and my mind can’t form images of sunsets,
of men chasing butterflies through fields of poppies.

I’ll try to make poetry with you this morning;
then I’ll see you off, as I always do, and you’ll
assure me that you’ll be back, as you always do.

Rain will soon be leaving this morning,
but I’ll be here—here to hear the call of the crowing cock,
to heed the plaintive moos of hungry cows, to wish
for rain during periods of drought.

This is a poem of subtlety

It operates upon feeling, repetition, images and tone. It is a direct appeal not only to the senses but to the heart. Thank you so much. Ron.
