Let me begin
Back in eighteen forty eight, the Young Ireland began,
They stood together in band o' brothers,
Both youngling child and man.
Each was ready to fight the cause, for our dear Ireland
They offered both their life and blood
To save the Irish clan.
There was a warrior named Thomas Kelly;
He led them in a fight
In eighteen hundred and sixty seven,
They fought for their forthwright
But sadly this uprising did not a vict'ry win,
Kelly was arrested, and locked away for his sin.
The British then got worried for the Irish were so brave,
And they determined to keep the North until
They saw their grave.
But they could never understand the strength of Irish men,
Who, when kicked down, would climb back up
And fight them once again.
The Church did not support O'Mahony's group Fenian
For they said their purposes were far too tyrrhenian
And though these men were Catholic,
But biased by belief
The lack of support from their faith
Brought them so much grief.
In the month December in eighteen sixty seven,
A bomb exploded in England, sending many up to heaven.
It had been planted in Clerkenwell prison by the Fenian men,
But only served to make the English hate them more then.
At last they realised that the Irish refused to lose,
And so concocted "Home Rule" so that they could now choose.
They thought by giving some power, that we would give in.
Obviously they underestimated Irish men.
Yet still so many years now gone, we are still divided,
With English rule still in the North,
Our full-bloods are being misguided.
Half say that they're Irish, but the others say never more,
And so they took amongst themselves, to go again to war.
Now, Irish fighting Irish is a terrible thought
Catholics versus Prodestants ; with their hist'ry forgot.
Do they not remember all the blood spilled down before
When English men took Irish men and brought them into war.
A story sad to tell this tale of my dear Ireland,
And all the fighting men who live together in this clan,
Yet Irish is what I am; I'll never praise the crown
Fierce, and independent - you will never take us down.
Author notes
It's a little jumbled, but I am 100% Irish, and BELIEVE in a united Ireland. Someday, it will come ...

You packed a large history lesson into this piece and done it quite well, the rhyme and flow is a little off in some places but the heart of the piece and your love of Ireland shines in this. Thank you for entering.

thank you so much for the inspiration, and also for hosting this contest
i am so glad that i came across it ; having originally intended to write something a little more serious [i had a silly rhyme tune going through my head whilst writing this] as so many of the famous irish songs are sad and melancholy but ... muse doesn't always take us where we want to go
