memories

Well, here we set again tonight,
in this old green rocking chair
Just you and I singing a lullaby,
these moments so precious, we share...

I smile as you sleepily rub your eyes,
and reach up to touch my nose
I grasp your hand and hold it in mine,
until your eyes have finally closed...

As I gaze upon your sleeping face,
your body held close to mine
I feel a little tug at my heart strings,
and my mind wonders back in time...

It takes me back to a small Georgia town,
and the smell of a hospital room
The memories of pain, frustration and fear,
for a son that was born to soon...

He wasn't lucky as you little one,
to be born this day and time
For there wasn't enough modern medicine,
to serve this son of mine...

I never had the chance to hold him,
or to say son I love you
For he slipped away to be with God,
beyond touch, beyond the blue...

It seems like only yesterday,
and I miss him so very much
For my heart still grieves in pain,
for the hands I never touched...

All I have are the memories,
of hearing his faint little cry,
a glimpse of his tiny body,
as they rolled the incubator by...

So you see your far more precious
than anyone will ever know,
For you've filled a gap in granny's
heart and thats why I love you so...

I feel the tears as they slip from my eyes,
upon your sleeping face
And thank God with all my heart and soul,
for sparing this bundle of lace...

Author notes

This poem was written for me when I was born by my grandmother. It became some type of "must do", because each grandchild was presented with one spelling out their name. However, this one was special to me, so I thought I would share it with everyone. I hope you all enjoy it. I know it is a little sad, but at the same time it is a happy poem.

Thank you for commenting. It is always the ones who love us the most that we forget sometimes. This is my way of reminding myself that through the good and bad times, she was there from the start. Thank you again, I appreciate you taking the time to read it.

I see where you get your talent from then! Perhaps this is a little sad, yes, but it's beautifully touching nonetheless.

Not at all, it was my pleasure reading. I only wish my commenting skills weren't so limited merely referring to this as beautiful does not do it justice. ^_^
