Creeping from the darkness,
From the night, and from the shadows;
What they want and where they came from,
No one really knows.
They are the things that creep and crawl,
The things that scratch and bite;
They are the things that howl and shriek,
That keep you up at night.
They are known by many names,
And yet are known by none.
They dance beneath the moonlight
And they vanish in the sun.
They are known as bogey men,
As banshees, spirits, ghosts.
They sing and dance and laugh and jeer
And rave and brag and boast.
They emerge from the corners
And come from the chimney floo;
They dance out in the garden,
Dropping the early morning dew.
With their long white fingers,
They tap at your window pane,
And with their chilling voices,
They softly call your name.
They are known by many names,
And yet are known by none;
They dance beneath the moonlight,
And they vanish in the sun.
