Kiss of Peace

Now in those days near the end,

as wars for peace were lost in vain,

and the blood of peace ran to the sea,

the world lusted for the art of weaponry;

around the globe they spoke of peace,

singing its praises from the mountaintop,

proclaiming peace on earth in its final hour,

and the heart of humanity was fiercely devoured;

in the end, failing Heaven's test of time,

when that beast of revelation was given reign,

war codes of conduct underscored the peaceful kill,

yet the earth reeled in shock when the sand stood still;

humanity now belongs to a dark universe,

annihilated by the deadly kiss of peace.

Contest prompt: 'The Second Coming' by William Butler Yeats:
http://oldpoetry.com/oauthor/show/William_Butler_Yeats

The "Spiritus Mundi" which Yeats wrote of is literally "Spirit of the World." He is referring to the antichrist in his poem, The Second Coming; "And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches toward Bethlaham to be born?"

    Thank you for this entry in the contest, and a great response to the prompt poem.

    You have used a very fitting image to illustrate your poem, one of the strongest indictments of war ever made. Picasso protested the bombing raids on a Spanish village during the Civil War, Yeats spoke of the impetus building for WW1, and your sonnet speaks of all wars.

    I like particularly 'the earth reeled in shock when the sand stood still' which is a confronting image for me, and seems to mean the end of the circle of time, of the falcon's gyre.
