Craven Sycophants

Heeled by a murderous hegemony

in insomniant star-craved nights

they creep through the foilage

devouring spirit, peace, and sentiment

sharp canines shredding

split tongues licking

surviving in a pitiable existence of weakness

with no conscious

in their duplicitous sin, unnoted

until it is too late.

.

Author notes

refers to life in a tyranny- trying to survive in a murderous, fear-gripped environment, where many say what they have to say, lie or not, hoping you will see the truth anyway and pity them, even rescue them; those who will lick whatever boots they must to protect self and family, and, most ignominiously, finger those who speak the truth to their doom to gain another day's favor, like a whipped cur, praying that the nightmare will all end soon (ie. life the late Soviet Union)...

of course, being a social issue, it could apply to many situations.

so... it represented the contest title...!

You've got strong metaphors here and each time, I read this, my point of view kept changing from thinking this was about war, gamble and next thing, you know, it clicked! It's about the picture prompt and damn, I got it. (It is about the picture prompt, right?)

Anyway, sorry about that. I'm sometimes slow when it comes to realizing a theme of a poem; all in all, yes, I am definitely impressed with this. I have nothing else to say- just genius
