Midnight Confession

I wrote of starlight once before,
and the doom that followed hence.
I tacked that mandate to my door,
and gave my heart no recompense.
She was a fool to love you still,
that lunatic inside of me.
And I was cruel and called her ill,
chuckling in fiendish glee.

So on this night I held my breath
as your blue eyes gazed into mine,
my inner sword poised firm for death
if not your words were true and kind.
You called me out and I could hear
my heart scream out in agony.
Yet I answered through my fear,
tears held back in honesty.

You took your turn upon that shore,
a balm as sweet as 'ere I knew.
You touched my knee - I loved you more.
You laced our fingers - my heart, it flew.
My God, my God, that I should know
such joy again from such a man:
his smile, his laugh, his eyes that glow,
the electric safety of his hand.

Lover and likewise dearest friend,
I'll keep this song until the end.

"I won't disappoint," you said to me.
All that and more, fair friend, for thee.
