Sins

She knew him by what he thought of her;
His eyes told more than his lips would allow,
She forgave herself that first impression,
It was better than how she knows him now.

Easy days were harder to find,
But now she has time to soak in thought.
She looks back on a land of frozen promises,
And waits for the time she goes back, when they thaw.

Just because she smiles doesn’t mean she’s sad,
It isn’t always a device to hide.
A layer of false smiles atop a layer of grief,
But underneath that is the happiness inside.

And the circus of her life has come to an end.
Just the gentle lull of that closing violin,
As she stares at the ceiling she remembers his face,
Hoping still being in love isn’t a sin.
