“When will it end Louie?”, she asks, not looking at him, but her eyes staring blankly through the window, seeing nothing but the thoughts in her mind.
He didn’t answer but took a deep draw on his cigarette and watched as the smoke rose languidly to the ceiling, his eyes following each twist and turn. She shifted slightly and captured his full attention again. He was in love with this woman, but never had the courage to tell her, she was after all much older than him and he was content for now to just be in her company. He was sure that in her eyes he was a complete stranger, would she ever truly notice him. How he longed to kiss those lips that caressed the tip of that cigarette, but he knew his feelings were not returned.
The question asked, but long forgotten as her thoughts drifted to the man who was close enough for her body to feel his heat, but in truth, so far away. How could she tell him the way she felt whenever he was close to her. She longed to reach out and touch his face, such a handsome face she thought, and felt a half smile spread to her lips.
He noticed her smile and said,
“What?”, curious to know what had made her smile.
She turned and looked at him, they’d worked together for some time, but there had always been an invisible barrier between them. She moved, leant across him and stubbed the cigarette out in the ashtray beside him on the bar. A sudden rush coursed through her body as her arm touched his leg, she hesitated, maybe a fraction to long. Had he sensed the passion in this beautiful woman.
In that one moment the atmosphere became highly charged as his fingertips brushed her cheek. She closed her eyes as though the feeling were unbearable, but in truth, she had waited for this time, this moment. His hand cupped her chin and raised her face to look directly at him. Their eyes locked and saw deep into each others soul and the sudden realisation of their true feelings for each other.
He bent and kissed her lips gently, almost afraid to touch, but she responded and all the doubts and barriers were broken in that one heartbeat. Their mouths parted and they smiled, conversation was now irrelevant. No more questions...
