She gifted me with my own words --
those that my brother endowed me with
in a lucid dream:
mysterious, you
that mill meaning
from murky water
Neatly quilted into a cushion
of hearts, stitched into a token
of love and of life:
my birthday present.
We giggled and hugged --
I, recovering from trombosis
she, from cancer.
We are alive! We love, we laugh.
We quilt our patchwork of pain
and endurance into hearts
filled with joy.
We mill meaning
from murky waters ...
those that my brother endowed me with
in a lucid dream:
mysterious, you
that mill meaning
from murky water
Neatly quilted into a cushion
of hearts, stitched into a token
of love and of life:
my birthday present.
We giggled and hugged --
I, recovering from trombosis
she, from cancer.
We are alive! We love, we laugh.
We quilt our patchwork of pain
and endurance into hearts
filled with joy.
We mill meaning
from murky waters ...
Author notes
A very good friend and family member of mine surprised me by gifting me with my own words, quilted into this lovely cushion. We both went through a hard time during the last few months -- she suffered far more than I did -- but ... we are alive, we love each other and we can laugh!

Thank you so much for hosting this contest.
I was inspired to write to my friend this poem!
The words on the pillow read as such:
geheimsinnig, jy
wat betekenis put
uit troebel water
I translated it in the poem as such:
mysterious, you
that mill meaning
from murky water
The words came from a dream I had, where my brother brought me this message ... I told my friend about this, and put the words on a postcard, which she kept and after all these years she gave the words back to me, written on this cushion. It was such a delightful surprise! It just confirmed to me that no matter how murky the water may be, through turmoil, love is always crystal clear ...

Congratulations and thanksgiving!
This is a truly thoughtful gift, of her time and love, with symbols of affection and soft comfort. I can see why you are pleased. To have survived together and be able to celebrate birthdays is wonderful in itself. "We are alive! We love, we laugh."

Murky water that once was, a cloud's showered gloss. The algae and and debris, preventing many to see, the matters they hide by obstructing The Light. But they will sink to the floor, leaving water murky no more. Ack,
Chris
