They come from all over
the world to stop and stare.
Do they understand the pain,
or the terror any one of us
felt as the ground quaked
beneath our feet?
Can they feel the pain
of limbs blown off or
of a comrade in arms
death?
Do they have a glimmer of what
our loved ones left behind
at home went through?
The dread of the telegram
arriving at the front door,
or of two Army, Navy, Air Force
or Marine officers walking up
the front yard with solemn
visage?
Do they appreciate the freedoms
bought, paid for with our
lives and the sacrifices
of a nation at war
or the pain of families
left behind.
Can they understand the proud
bitterness of the child left to
grow up without a father
or parents without a son?
Do they....
Can they...
Will they...

Wow! Good job. This is truly a heart felt poem. Not many people realize what one must suffer through and the agonizing pain they suffer just so we can be free. They don't understand what it is like for family to have the officers show up at their doors and have their lives forever changed. You did a really good job getting this point across.

Merry meet,
Thank you for your enthusiatic applause and wonderful comments. Fortunatly, I have not had this experience personally. but I can only imagine the pain and grief it would cause to find the good Men and Women who are tasked with this tough job, walking up my sidewalk to my house. I really feel for those families who do. Thank you for commenting.

not to many people actually do unless they live it.. -

Merry meet,
This is sad, but true. Many of us do not think about such things unless they touch our lives personally.
