In deepest fall of late October,
Out on a deserted country road.
At midnight's stroke crossing over,
A ghastly phantom forms and floats.
Can only happen on Hallow's Eve.
In the bewitching hours moonlit glow.
A headless horseman on the blackest steed,
Seeks his head far from his ancestral home.
In life the Hessian was but a mercenary,
A fearsome serving soldier repaying debt.
Fighting battles for a King so contrary,
for a King's sinful greed he'd come to lament.
Bloodily victorious was the Hessian's sword,
Fighting against American Patriots sway.
Yet befell by a cannon ball far off course,
Beheading him taking his indebted life away.
Forgive my fear and long winded digression.
Yet if legend's unknown of this fearless Hessian.
I'm showing cause on behalf of the darker side,
Explain how, when and where he fell and died.
In a sleepy hollow lies the burg of Tarry Town.
In the state of New York is where it's found.
There, lived a school Master named Ichabod Crane.
Who one dark night disappeared unto this day.
Ichabod vied for the hand of Kat Van Tassel,
And if truth be known he fell in a hassle.
Not by a horseman, but by Brom Bones bad hand,
Yet we'll never be sure if or how the truth stands.
Legend tells us on a covered wooden bridge,
Over the Pocantico River just beyond a ridge.
Came a murderous disappearance of poor Ichabod,
By a horseman's hand out there in a night dark.
You can believe what you will, but I'm not so sure.
It's all a mystery,and I'm not saying it's curse.
But many claim to of seen the headless sword welding ghost,
Draw your own conclusions, let the devil take the hind most!
I'll not venture outside Tarry Town after dark.
I'll not become another notch of the horseman's mark.
