Walking down these Irish roads with a random black and white dog
I've not been able to shake this little mutt since the country side
He must have never seen an American in uniform leaning on a cane
Or he just thought I was interesting decided to follow along for a bit
The lands so beautiful, walking along these cobblestones is peaceful
Slowly I make my way to the church on this quiet morning
But for the first time in a long time my eyes are watery as I walk
The click of my cane harmonizes with the click of the dog's nails
Little mutt goes to the door waiting for me as I pause to stare
Drying my eyes slowly I struggle up the stairs then open the door
A calming church, the candles were lit dancing across the walls
The click is loud,I am afraid of angering God with the noise
I rest myself in the back in a wooden pew wishing I wasn't here
The priest speaks the words of beauty, hope, love, compassion
I curse but they still bring a comfort to a soul that is exhausted
Tears flow as I listen to the words written by man, inspired by God
I stare at the walls decorated with pieces of man's handiwork
Each one trying to capture the glory of a God that watched over us
The colorful lights dancing through the painted windows with stories
A mighty cross with a fallen savior stretched out embracing my mate
The white robed angel stands over the coffin wrapped in the flag
I drop my eyes to the red plush carpet as they end the service
My tears stain the carpet, then stain the grainwood of the pews
Painfully I arise to my feet leaning heavily on my cane weeping
Click, click, click goes my cane as I make my way to the front
Resting my hand on the flag covered coffin I whisper my thanks
The light of God surrounds me as I stand by the coffin saying bye
click, click, click I make my way out of the beautiful monestary...
There on the footsteps the little mutt awaits me patiently
Reaching down I scratch his ears, moving carefully down the road
This quiet morning I know I'll never forget the peaceful monestary
Where I saw my friend embraced into the arms of a loving God...

Where I saw my friend embraced into the arms of a loving God
Very nice poem, you're very good and describing things. Nice imagery and I could almost see Ireland. Thanks for entering and good luck in my contest.
Nice words.

I've never cried because of a poem before, and I can't say that anymore. I don't really know what to say to say to this either, I'm not heartless enough to try and correct you even if I HAD seen mistakes and this isn't the type ofpoem that sends me into fangirl mode. So I don't know what to do.
I hope you understand.

A deep reflective poem. Sombre yet recognizing the rays of hope and making a new friend to boot. Life continues whether we care or not. Wonderful entry, thank you.

i thought it was sad and sweet all in one .. and I read it not knowing it was completely false and for a contest until after I was done. I realized then it was for a contest, so i looked a the contest and I was like "OOOOH" LOL actually the imagery was pretty good.. and thinking it was true made me sad.

Beautiful.. The imgaery was so vivid, the man, the dog.. Everything. The coffin wrapped in a fla made me think of my grandfather's funeral. Best of luck in the contest.
