Twenty Years

Twenty years (with you)
is not enough.
I don’t want to share you
with the stars
and their infinity,
not yet.
I’m yours
and I’ll sit by you,
even if you don’t
open your eyes.

Author notes

For my mum, who is in hospital having a cancerous tumor removed as I post this. All my thoughts are with her.

Not for editing. Just to express my love.

UPDATE: 22/09/2009, I felt I needed to update my AN a year after the posting of this poem. My mum recovered successfully from the op and although she still undergoes regular health checks she is making her way back to normal health and is living life to the full.

    dedication....

I love this poem as it is over 18 months since I went through a similar experience with my daughter who is still surviving brain cancer. You expressed such devotion and love tinged with the reality of human fraility.
    great update!!

My thoughts too go to both you and your mom whom it is clear you love dearly. She must be an amazing person to create such love from you. I would leave it exactly as it is. Don't change a thing. And I don't just mean your poetry...

This is amazing on so many levels, and I love how you described a possible death as not wanting to share your loved one with the stars - it is so profound. Thank you for sharing such a touching poem with us. I feel you have structured it so well and created something so simple yet rich in emotional complexity that it is perfect just the way it is.

    My

young lady in just a few lines you say so much. Mom is loved and with love anything is possible. She should be proud of her daughter as a person and a poet. I wish both of you much joy and happiness together.
