Two Thousand and One

This is the year that forever changed my life
Even now it’s difficult to sit down and write
About the year I thought would never end
That horrible year I lost my two best friends

On March 15, 2001 it was as if God eclipsed my sun
On this day my mother died and I was totally undone
I thought and wished my life would end on that very day
But it wasn’t in His plans I didn’t have my way

My twin sister was still here for me to take care
An amputee with kidney failure trapped in her wheelchair
I loved her more than life itself I would have shared mine
But it wasn’t good enough; see how life can be so unkind

Then less then eight short months still grieving for my mom
God once again said I’m sorry, and then he dropped another bomb
November 6, 2001 again my world is undone; he took my beloved twin from me
Blinded by the pain I hurt so badly I screamed like a banshee

Inconsolable, unable to go on with my life I shut down completely
Not knowing what to do, no one to care for, and no one needed me
That’s when I realized after all those years; it was time for me to live
All my life as the caregiver, I’d given all I had left in me to give

I sold the house of thirty-seven years and bought a small one
Continued my education which long ago I had just begun
Volunteered at several non profit organizations for the disabled
The man of my dreams found me, right out of the pages of a fable

He’s everything I had hoped for and never thought to find
Our hearts are synchronized, his even beats in unison with mine
He wants and needs me so that takes care of my nurturing side
He fulfills my every desire and one day soon, I'll be his loving bride
