As the first game begins
I'm standing right there
gripping at the fence
burning his back with my stare
I lose him in the rush
my heart starts beating fast
until number fifty-two
I see him again at last
Cheering and breathing once more
until the next play
crossing fingers and toes
praying he'll make it through this day
Feeling pride as he tackles
the "big monster" face to face
wiping tears from years gone
a young man has took my boys place
It's the first of many challenges
of growing up for him and me
letting the apron strings untie
watching...to see what he will be

Thanks!
I have three boys and the one I wrote about in this poem is my baby boy.
I believe the baby is the hardest one to let go of...but it's going to happen,it always does!
If you get the chance I have another poem called "My First Born" that I wrote awhile back that you might enjoy!
Thanks again

This is a really lovely write, very personal, and very true to life. My eldest boy qualified as a teacher recently, and ssing him head off with a brief case everyday instead of his pe kit still fills me up. This is a lovely subject you have a nice rhythm, and brought the story to life with good images great write thanks littlefishone
