I met a man on road today
He said something about dreaming
And that he was looking to settle down
Not a place to stay
Breakfast at Denny's
I ordered a cup of Joe
He Moons Over My Hammy
All on me, for he had not a penny
Nice talk only goes so far
So I asked him where he was headed
He smiled
And pulled out of his backpack a jar
Full of letters
“To my wife” he laughed
And from the way he spoke
With a tear in his eye
I thought her to be dead
When I spoke as much he said
“NO!
She is alive.”
In silence we finished, waiting for the waitress named Ally
I paid the bill and assured him that he bore me no debt
We rose and went back out to the road upon which he walked
And stood for a moment, looking down into the late autumn valley
“Where are you going?”
“To find my wife.”
“Where is she?”
He smiled and refused to look away as a tear fell down his lightly bearded cheek.
“I don’t know.”

A very interesting idea - it bears a little more work in my opinion to make it fly. Thanks for your entry and happy trails

I really enjoyed this...
More prose than poetry ...IMHO...but a great thought provoking story...
All of the entries in this contest were great...
some gave me exactly what I was looking for ....
this is not as unique as I was looking for ...but I like your style. I am inviting you and the others that didn't get into round two...to another contest.
Thanks so much for entering...I look forward to reading more!!!
Write on.

excellent. i love this. it's so touching and, dare i say, unique. (at least to me.) a jar full of letters for someone he's never met. that's just so fantastic. thanks for sharing such a great image in such a smoothly flowing poem. best wishes
