I just couldn’t grasp the feeling
of being alone. After all, I spend years
with the thuds of balls on cement, music
blaring from inside closed doors, phones
ringing, and small voices singing. Constant
barrage of movement and chatter about
things that didn't seem to really matter.
Screaming and yelling, crying and laughing.
Memories of two sons and young daughter
being taught the lessons of life. My wife
expressing her love on long winter nights
until I look around, and they were all gone.
And then, I typed away on my computer
my fingers would click into the night
and echo out on blank walls. There were plenty
of stories to be written filled with adventures
of worldly characters caught on foreign shores.
Twisted plots of lovers and foul companions
abandoned by deranged parents, selling drugs
to unsuspecting children whose cries drift
past empty buildings that showed their age
and mimicked my very thoughts. I couldn't
make sense of my silent yet troubled mind.
I felt like a prisoner in solitary confinement.

Aww Charley. This is so sad. It's always hard to deal when your kids grow up and move away. You know I am here for you if you want to talk about it.

Powerful write, Charley. I thought the ending was especially powerful. It made me think of how maybe the only thing that holds people back from succeeding at the things they want to do in life are themselves. It can all depend on how much someone believes in themselves sometimes. Thanks for sharing and keep that pen flowing.
