Yellow cab
Sky gray
A stray day
So drab
Where did this Monday go?
Wandering down Wabash and Randolph
I could have tossed my briefcase into the street
And no one would have cared
Not even if my briefcase threw me instead
Exhausted perfume
Gross hue to that fake cloud plume
Sewers spewing some aroma from beneath my feet
9 to 5
I am living
But I'm not alive.
I stop
And look up at the titans of glass and steel
I am so small
One bit of dust in a whirlwind of
yellow cabs
hotdogs stands
unrealistic deadlines
nagging demands
and days like scabs
That your mind picks at until
you're bleeding
and tired
and angry
and...
Clean, earthy
Heavy, as if just before the rain
A whispery wind across my cheek
The taste of night's tears upon the grass
Something tickling my ears
Something lighting a fire at the back of my throat
Something hits my knees
Something wet passing beside my lips
Where-?
She turned back for a glance
And watched him fall
Glasses dropping from his hand
Knees smacking the sidewalk
Perhaps she'd bumped him as she passed
But she was late
He would, of course, be alright
She sniffed in irritation
This new perfume was disgusting
Autumn Woods...environmentalist crap.
She walked away
And never saw him cry.
